Article

An article is a word that is used to show that a noun is a noun without expressing itself. The articles are a subclass of the determiners. 

For example:

Incorrect: I bought book

Correct: I bought a book


Incorrect: He is M.A. student.

Correct: He is an M.A. student.


Incorrect: More you practice, more you learn.

Correct: The more you practice, the more you learn.


Type of Article

Definite Articles: 'The' is called the definite article. 'The' is used before a noun to indicate that the identity of the noun is known to the reader. For example,

Ram is standing at the door. 

We practice dancing in the Kumari hall.


The rule for using definite articles:
  • Before a specific person or thing.
Give me the camera which is near to you. ( a specific camera )
Play the song sung by Narayan Gopal. ( a specific song that is only sung by Narayan Gopal )

  • Before names of nationalities, religions, groups, races, posts, museums, hotels, and clubs.
The Chinese people are smart.
I have won first prize in badminton organized by the Lions Club.

But: Nia is a Catholic.

  • Before the human organs, and musical instruments

The heart pumps blood.

He is playing the guitar.


  • Before comparative degrees

Ostriches are the largest birds.



  • Before the name of the state
It is too hot in the Terai region.

  • Before century, decade, millennium, etc.
Doraemon is from the 22nd century.

  • Before the names of rivers, seas, oceans, deserts, mountain ranges, gulfs, etc.
They sailed in the Pacific Ocean.
Hari Buddha Magar climbed the Sagarmatha with no legs.


Indefinite Article: 'A' and 'An' is called indefinite article. The indefinite article (a, an) is used before a noun that is general or when its identity is not known. For example,

Are you going to buy a house?

I saw a boat.


The rule for using indefinite articles:

  • 'A' or 'An' is used before the noun, referring to any member of a group.
He gifted me a ring. ( This refers to any ring )
Ram wants to meet a singer. ( He wants to meet any singer, not a specific one )

  • 'a' is used before constant sound.
I have a calculator.

  • 'an' is used before the vowel sound.

Can you get me an ice cream?

  • A/An is used to refer to a particular member of a group or class with names of jobs, nationalities, and religions to refer to individuals.
He is a singer.
He works as an accountant.

  • A/An + abbreviation
He is a U.S. citizen.
An NGO is working for children's welfare.
Hari has an M.B.B.S. degree.

  • Before countable singular nouns

I took an umbrella from your desk.
He went to the library for a book.

  • We use a/an before quantities and with the meaning per.
He bought a dozen of copies.
She sold the potatoes at 100 rupees a kilo.

  • 'A' or 'An' is used in the phrases like - a lot of, a cup of, a piece of, a couple of, a few.

  • Don't use an article before abstract and material nouns.

  • Don't use an article before festivals, relatives, and games.

Just go out and play football.

  • Don't use an article before the names of places, people, and countries.
