Article
An article is a word that is used to show that a noun is a noun without expressing itself. The articles are a subclass of the determiners.
For example:
Incorrect: I bought book
Correct: I bought a book
Incorrect: He is M.A. student.
Correct: He is an M.A. student.
Incorrect: More you practice, more you learn.
Correct: The more you practice, the more you learn.
Type of Article
Definite Articles: 'The' is called the definite article. 'The' is used before a noun to indicate that the identity of the noun is known to the reader. For example,
Ram is standing at the door.
We practice dancing in the Kumari hall.
- Before a specific person or thing.
- Before names of nationalities, religions, groups, races, posts, museums, hotels, and clubs.
- Before the human organs, and musical instruments
The heart pumps blood.
He is playing the guitar.
- Before comparative degrees
Ostriches are the largest birds.
- Before the name of the state
- Before century, decade, millennium, etc.
- Before the names of rivers, seas, oceans, deserts, mountain ranges, gulfs, etc.
Indefinite Article: 'A' and 'An' is called indefinite article. The indefinite article (a, an) is used before a noun that is general or when its identity is not known. For example,

The rule for using indefinite articles:
- 'A' or 'An' is used before the noun, referring to any member of a group.
- 'a' is used before constant sound.
- 'an' is used before the vowel sound.
- A/An is used to refer to a particular member of a group or class with names of jobs, nationalities, and religions to refer to individuals.
- A/An + abbreviation
- Before countable singular nouns
- We use a/an before quantities and with the meaning per.
- 'A' or 'An' is used in the phrases like - a lot of, a cup of, a piece of, a couple of, a few.
Omission of Articles
- Don't use an article before abstract and material nouns.
- Don't use an article before diseases
- Don't use an article before festivals, relatives, and games.
- Don't use an article before the names of places, people, and countries.
